Homotoxicology:For You and Your PetBy Dr. Trish Kallenbach, DVM, CVCP Getting Started Toward HealthyWhile there are many unhealthy people on this planet, it does not have to be that way. But we must work at our own health, and almost certainly in more ways than we may want. In a time of overwhelming usage of pharmaceuticals by our physicians as the primary treatment choices for our failing health and huge amounts of information available to us from so many other sources, it can be a challenge to sort through it all to make an “educated decision” for our healthcare. But the common factor shared by all is the desire to be healthy. But the question is: What is healthy? Each of us may have a different determination of this. Is it free of all disease? Is it free of pain? Or is it happy with our level of health and/or satisfied with our level of striving for health? Nutrition, exercise and hygiene are all factors that have been stressed since early childhood. But as the sources of our nutrition worsen, and the “medical” options spiral into so many additional health complications, we are plunged into a fierce battle to discover healthy alternatives against the “norm”. Many options are available for us, so take the plunge, but look out! The water may be deep and murky. In this edition of our newsletter, homotoxicology will be our focus. It is but one of the many modalities we can embrace to re-establish healing to our bodies and health into our lives. Homotoxicology is the view that the processes, syndromes, and manifestations, which we designate as disease, are the expression thereof that the body is combating poisons and that it wants to neutralize and excrete these poisons. The body either wins or loses the fight. Let’s choose to WIN!!! Let’s Get The Lead Out!ALL disease is the accumulation of toxins, internally made or externally absorbed. And yes, one of these IS lead. Unfortunately, there are many more than that. But all create what we SEE as the symptoms of the decline of health. Our body has a system by which it functions to remove toxins from our body, but as the burden of heavier loads of toxins are put upon our body this process becomes incomplete. Let’s briefly look at the normal progress of our body’s defense system. As our body first experiences a toxin, regardless of the source, it tries to excrete it through the normal channels available to it: urine, feces, sweat, respiratory discharge, etc. If this proves inadequate, the body calls on the immune system to cause an influx of white blood cells to try to engulf and remove the toxin. This is inflammation, which we are all familiar with. But if this also fails, these toxins get deposited somewhere in the make-up of our body. There are often very few symptoms up through this stage. As the toxins continue to build up, the structural integrity is impregnated with toxic accumulation and symptoms progress and damage to cells results. As cell systems are increasingly destroyed, resulting in more and more cell death, we enter into a degenerative phase of disease where serious damage to cells progresses and organ damage occurs. The symptoms are significant, progressive, and often debilitation by now. Eventually, the final stage of this progression occurs: that of the neoplastic phase. This is a stage characterized by the survival of undifferentiated, non-specific cells that we classify as a malignant disease. Yet, all of this is just a progression of one factor: the accumulation, to the extreme, of toxins in our body. So let’s GET THE LEAD OUT!!! Now Let's Get to Our Best Friend. While we may have been raised to respect our body and what goes in it, skipping those school years, of course, our pets are another story entirely. Over the last one hundred years, as our society has changed, we have moved our pets from their natural environment, mutated our pets (others call it breeding) and, through the invent of processed refuse-based pet foods and “nutritional” advice, we have taken primarily raw food carnivores and turned them into refuse grain-eating rodents. So not only is their body overrun with toxins, they are not even starting on an even playing field of basic adequate nutrition. But the body is programmed to survive, so our pets
struggle on, slowly adapting as best they can, to have some level of survival.
But they cannot seek out a healthier life, because we won’t let them! How many strange actions do we see our pets doing and wonder why? Eating foreign objects. Eating feces. Chewing grass or other “odd” foods. Let’s begin by looking at our dog, or cat, for what they are. Left alone, your dog or cat would not graze the wheat field or rice patty. They would not eat the chicken’s feet and feathers and leave the more nutritious meat, organs and bones. And they would not eat small amounts frequently, as their diminished appetite demands. Instead they would catch a meal, eat until they were engorged, lie around digesting for days and hope to catch something else next week. The dog might eat some fruits and berries, if it came across them and, in hard times might dig up a tuber to sustain itself. The cat wouldn’t deign to eat anything not regally dressed in mouse fur (or some other luxurious coat). End of story. So stopping the continual input of toxins, via diet, into our pets is a HUGE part of their “health plan”.1. Find a diet that is wholesome. Don’t be misled. 2. Make sure their activity is adequate. 3. Give them training and a job. 4. Minimize the number of chemicals they are exposed to, from household cleaner to fleaproducts and medications, as deemed safe. 5. Add natural products to aid digestion and balance the intestinal tract. 6. Once these factors have leveled out, then do more extensive healing through homotoxicology or other modalities. 7. Get advice as needed from specialists trained for caring for your pet naturally. Helping Yourself and Your Pet with HomotoxicologyYou can help your pet and your own health using homotoxicology by looking at all of the symptoms of ill-health and begin to understand them as the signs of a battle going on and determine how best to HELP your body win the battle, rather than just stop the body from having those symptoms. That often only enables the disease, not your body! Vomit and diarrhea are a purging event, not a disaster! Fever and sweating are another attempt to expel toxins and kill invading organisms. Even anemia can be the body trying to limit a viral infection! To use homotoxicology to help the body fight the disease, find a homoepathic preparation (single or combination) that is indicated for by the symptoms you see but realize you are not blocking the body from having that symptom, simply more quickly allowing the body to excrete the toxin so the detoxifying symptom regresses. This is often best done under the guidance of a professional as there are many homeopathics that may seem to address the same symptom, but only in a superficial study. To use the incorrect homeopathic and be disappointed that you did not improve is equivalent to putting a bandage on your finger for a cut toe and being equally disappointed that it did not help. The Elements of a DiseaseIn the course of treating a disease with the theories of homotoxicology, one must get a detailed amount of information. This can be difficult for the human, who comes in with preconceived ideas about their problem, and for the pet, because they cannot answer the questions at all. These facts must be accurately obtained or deduced: The definition of the disease The record of symptoms The shifting of the disease The excretions of toxins The treatment of the disease after it shifts into excretion phase “Rinse and Repeat” In other words, this is a step by step process and as you treat and shift the body to excrete toxins, you must re-evaluate and look at the “new” disease you have uncovered.Due to the complexity of disease, it is essential that the person or owner is “on board” for the entire treatment or you may see some improvement but it is only the beginning of healing. Due to the length of time in disease, a person or owner must realize that what may seem acutely occurring to them may indeed have taken months to years to occur and may take equally long healing times. The body is a whole. This concept is often overlooked in conventional medicine. One area of the body cannot be diseased and not affect many other areas of the body. The body is a masterpiece of intercommunicating parts. Every Modality has Limitations. Homotoxicology, just like most other modalities, cannot heal everything, and often it is a combination of several that results in the best level of health. 100% Healing may not be Attainable. While complete healing is always the goal, one must always be aware there may be areas permanently damaged that the body cannot rebuild. The goal is to attain “maximum possible health” and to maintain it.
